I feel very lucky to still love my job after 30 years in Audiology!
I get to help people every day and make an impact on their lives; some of my younger customers that are still working tell me that accepting hearing loss and wearing hearing aids has made a massive difference to their confidence and overall enjoyment of life.
My retired customers tell me they had stopped going to social engagements or don’t enjoy them anymore as they are just nodding and smiling but haven’t a clue what’s being said. Hearing loss can cause social isolation; The World Health Organisation says social isolation causes a greater health risk than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Even if a customer hearing loss is temporarily caused by impacted wax it can be very distressing, we remove wax in our practice by micro suction and the gratitude I am shown for this simple, painless procedure is priceless, I really get to feel good about my work every day! The wax removal part of our business has grown exponentially due to many GP surgeries stopping providing this service.
Hearing aids have developed massively since I was a student 31 years ago at a North Manchester hospital. We have Lyric a 100% invisible hearing aid that is worn 24 hours a day, you sleep, shower and exercise while wearing it, you can literally forget your wearing hearing aids. Many of our hearing aids now connect to your mobile phone and iPad allowing you to stream phone calls, face time, music, iPlayer – literally anything with an audio source. You can also use your phone as a remote control for your hearing aids allowing you to adjust the volume, change programs and many other features.
Five years ago I opened my own practice on Rose St Aberdeen and we have grown year on year and have the most amazing loyal customers that continue to recommend us to friends and family for which we are very grateful. Here’s to the next five years!
