Ear Wax Removal

Treating Ear Wax

Ear wax is a natural by-product of the ear canal and in most of the population it falls out without any intervention. If it does build up it can cause your hearing to be reduced and a blocked feeling. Hearing loss, pain or discomfort in your ear may be signs of ear wax build-up. Ear wax can be relatively innocuous, but in some cases it can have a real impact on your quality of life.

Having problematic ear wax removed is an important part of your ear health, and overall wellbeing. According to the RNID 2.3 million people a year in the UK need their ear wax removed by a professional.

Ear Wax Removal Treatments

There are two methods of ear wax removal. The preferred method today is micro-suction.

At Bryce Hearing Services we recommend that an ear wax softening product, such as Earol Olive Oil Spray, is used for at least a couple of days before your appointment, this will help to soften the built up wax and will make it easier and quicker to remove. However ear drops and sprays of any type must not be used if you have a perforated eardrum!

Micro-suction

This is where a special suction device is used to remove the earwax under a microscope. It involves a low-pressure suction probe being inserted into the ear which will remove excess wax and debris. This latest technology means your ear wax removal will be quick, safe, painless and effective.

Ear Irrigation

The less common method of wax removal is irrigation, this involves using a pressurised flow of water to gently remove the build-up of wax in the ear canal.

At your appointment you will be asked questions about:

  • Pain in either ear
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo (the sensation of movement when still)
  • Hearing loss

These symptoms may be the result of an ear infection and must be treated before wax removal can be performed.

Ear irrigation is not recommended if you have:

  • Previously had problems with irrigation, such as pain in your ear or severe vertigo
  • A perforated eardrum, or you have had a perforated eardrum in the last 12 months
  • A discharge of mucus from your ear, which may indicate an undiagnosed perforation
  •  Had a middle ear infection (otitis media) in the past six weeks
  • A grommet (a small hollow tube surgically inserted into your ear if you have a build up of fluid that causes hearing difficulties)
  • Had ear surgery, apart from cases of extruded grommets, within the last 18 months
  • A cleft palate (whether repaired or not)
  • A foreign body in your ear
  • A severe external ear infection (acute otitis externa) with pain in the ear canal or pinna (the visible part of your ear)

A wax removal appointment with Jayne Bryce is priced at £65. Please be aware that we require payment to be made on booking; if the appointment is cancelled within 24 hours of the appointment and is not rescheduled a full refund will be given.

Home Visit Ear Wax Removal Treatments

We now offer a home visit wax removal service to customers that cannot get into our clinic. Wax removal will be carried out by a qualified hearing aid audiologist using Micro-suction. The cost of the service will depend on your proximity to our city centre office but it is anticipated that there will be minimum charge of £100 for customers within a 10 mile radius of Aberdeen city centre.

Bryce Hearing Services I cannot express how grateful I am for the expertise and help I received from Jayne Bryce at Bryce Hearing Services. I wakened up one morning a few weeks ago to find my right ear was closed and was left very deaf. I honestly thought I had a build up of wax in my ear. I called BHS for an appointment to get my ears syringed, I received an appointment for a couple of hours later. Going into Aberdeen I was met by a friendly receptionist then taken into a room where Jayne checked my ears to find a small amount of wax. After going through a few questions she told me she thought I had had a virus go through my inner ear. Jayne then did a hearing test which she found my right ear was real bad, then went on to be very adamant that I had to phone my Doctor and get an appointment for today and had get a prescription of steroids starting immediately If I could not get an appointment Jayne wanted me to go to ARI accident and emergency for the steroids as it was imperative that I started steroids that day. I got a Drs appointment and my Dr said he hadn’t seen this for a good few years and agreed with Jayne to give me the steroids but also referred me to a professor at Albyn Hospital. When seeing the Prof he agreed with everything that Jayne had done and was delighted that I had received the steroids and that had certainly helped. The Prof asked me to go back to Jayne in 4 weeks and do another hearing test to see if my hearing had improved. I was back last week and my hearing has come back and it’s only by the quick response of Jayne making me get a Drs appointment and to get a course of steroids as quickly as possible into my system If I had left it it could of left me with irreparable damage to my hearing so please take a warning if you think it’s wax get it checked by people that know about hearing and the inner ears I cannot thank Jayne Bryce and BHS enough for the quick response on helping me and saving my hearing

I have used Bryce Hearing Services for about a decade now and I have always found their services to be excellent. I consider my annual Ear Inspection and MOT to be excellent value, and a first-class way of maintaining and protecting my hearing. This was even more true late last year when, on a routine visit, a fungal infection trying to take hold in an ear was spotted. Thanks to Jayne's attentiveness and good advice I was able to contact my GP and what could have been a very nasty and difficult to treat infection was caught early and dealt with quickly and effectively. I have no reservation in recommending Bryce Hearing Services for their truly Five Star Services.

As a son of an elderly parent with significant hearing loss and the need for professional service and advice we were extremely satisfied with the services provided by the Bryce Hearing Clinic. The caring and can do attitude was evident from our initial visit and has continued in any after care my father needs to ensure the high level of quality hearing ability he has experienced since obtaining his new hearing aids in December.
