Ear wax is a natural by-product of the ear canal and in most of the population it falls out without any intervention. If it does build up it can cause your hearing to be reduced and a blocked feeling. Hearing loss, pain or discomfort in your ear may be signs of ear wax build-up. Ear wax can be relatively innocuous, but in some cases it can have a real impact on your quality of life.
Having problematic ear wax removed is an important part of your ear health, and overall wellbeing. According to the RNID 2.3 million people a year in the UK need their ear wax removed by a professional.
There are two methods of ear wax removal. The preferred method today is micro-suction.
At Bryce Hearing Services we recommend that an ear wax softening product, such as Earol Olive Oil Spray, is used for at least a couple of days before your appointment, this will help to soften the built up wax and will make it easier and quicker to remove. However ear drops and sprays of any type must not be used if you have a perforated eardrum!
This is where a special suction device is used to remove the earwax under a microscope. It involves a low-pressure suction probe being inserted into the ear which will remove excess wax and debris. This latest technology means your ear wax removal will be quick, safe, painless and effective.
The less common method of wax removal is irrigation, this involves using a pressurised flow of water to gently remove the build-up of wax in the ear canal.
At your appointment you will be asked questions about:
These symptoms may be the result of an ear infection and must be treated before wax removal can be performed.
Ear irrigation is not recommended if you have:

What our customers say
Sandra McKechnie4. December, 2025. Both my husband and I chose Bryce Hearing Services to have our hearing tested. I was reassured that I don’t need hearing aids yet but will return in the future if needed. My husband has been trialling hearing aids for the last few weeks and found them to be game changing. The care, advice and patience shown by Fraser and Jayne has been excellent and there was no pressure to make a decision. The warmest welcome by Jackie on reception put us at ease immediately. Highly recommend to anyone who has even slight concerns about their hearing. We are in great hands! James Chalmers10. October, 2025. This was my first time at Bryce Hearing Services and it really was a First class service from Jayne and the team. From the moment I entered, the receptionist made me feel very welcome and chatted away and had no issue with me arriving early. I then had my appointment with Jayne the Audiologist and she started chatting about the history of my hearing issues. I then completed the various hearing tests and Jayne then went through the result graphs with me explaining the various areas of sounds /tones where my hearing loss was occurring. Jayne advised that my current hearing aids were doing what they are supposed to do and I really didn't require new aids at present. There was no sales pressure for me to buy new ones and Jayne also offered me to trial another set FOC. As they are a private independent company I felt it was a much more professional & personal service I received and there was no rush to get the next customer in as there is with the larger national companies. I would certainly recommend Bryce very highly to anyone that is having an issue with their hearing. James Noble21. August, 2025. Jayne and an excellent Audiologist and is always very welcoming and easy to deal with. When I pop in Jackie on reception is fabulous, friendly and chatty. Jackie can’t do enough to help and always get 5 stars from me. Wonderful service at Bryce Hearing Services Rob Flett16. June, 2025. I recently used this company's service for the first time the other day for my hearing test as I work in the events industry. And what a total pleasure it was. Jayne and her staff were very kind, patient and helpful though out. I will be recommending this company to my team, family and friends in the future. Well deserved 5 stars 🤩 Drew Leitch10. June, 2025. I have no hesitation in recommending Bryce Hearing Services. From first appointment, to fitting, to follow up, the service offered by Jayne and her team has been first class. Alan Patterson6. May, 2025. Excellent service. Went in to have earwax removed and then a hearing test. Made a massive difference to my hearing, actually cant believe the change! Professional, friendly and informative. My earwax wouldn't budge on the first attempt, and was given good advice to use Earol spray daily and come back after a week and all good on the second go. Would highly recommend. Peter Wiuff19. April, 2025. Went to get a hearing test, and it was a very professional and thorough appointment. They were able to help with all my questions and queries jim mcfadyen14. March, 2025. In summary Bryce provide an excellent highly professional service and I recommend them to anyone who has concerns about their hearing. Nice friendly welcome from the reception staff. Jayne (Audiometrist) was very knowledgable and fully explained all of my hearing test results. The discussion about use of a hearing aid was collaborative and there was no sales pitch. I was provided a demonstration set to fully trial for just over a week. This allowed me to trial the aid in various settings. Ultimately I did not feel that my hearing is at the stage where the benefit provided by the aid is significant, but I will revisit this at my next hearing test at Bryce. Ian Staples27. January, 2025. Excellent service William Urquhart27. January, 2025. Two years ago , was aware that my hearing was deteriorating and like many others I found that to get a test or an retest at the NHS Audiology Department I was faced with a long waiting time. With this in mind I decided to "check out private Audiology companies in Aberdeen I noticed that Bryce Hearing Services had a number of positive reviews. so decided to contact them., and was not disappointed by my choice . I was seen personally by the owner Jayne Bryce, after a number of questions., hearing tests was fitted with two Starkey ( in ear) hearing aids, that improved my hearing by 100per cent.!! Recently I was contacted for a review, and after a quick phone call an appointment was arranged. This time I was seen by Fraser Bryce and after the usual questions Fraser checked both ears for wax retested my hearing, then adjusted my aids to my recent test. My thanks to Fraser for his help and professionalism then was most surprised I was told today's visit was FOC !! If you are having problems with your hearing.i strongly suggest that you contact Bryce Hearing Services. Bill Urquhart.Google rating score: 5.0 of 5, based on 46 reviews
